11 points to consider when renovating a kitchen
Published1. Budget
The first thing to think about when contemplating a new kitchen renovation is how much money are you willing to spend. Whatever you spend on your renovation, think about how many more years of enjoyment you will get out of the room when it’s completed and the capital gain it will add to the value of the house in the long run.
2. Project Management & Tradespeople
Engaging only with professional and experienced tradespeople will keep your mind at ease when it comes to the timeline of the renovation and keeping to a set budget. At The Inside Project, we project manage a number of experienced tradespeople that have been contracting with us for several years. Thorough, honest, methodical and organised our tradies will communicate with the client and with the project manager to keep the project moving along every step of the way.
3. Layout
Consider the size of your room and imagine where the flow of traffic will be best suited for the space available. From a U-shaped layout, to a galley style, or an oft used L-shape with central island bench… the layout of your cabinets will dictate how your appliances will be placed to get optimum use of the area.
4. Design
With the help from a kitchen design professional, you can bring together your vision to perfectly sit within your home. A designer can confirm whether your longed for 5 metre island bench will fit into your space and they can measure up how much space you will have available to you for practical bench preparation.
They will advise you on how much storage is available in your design and they will help to offer solutions that you may not have considered when trying to get the most out of the space available. A qualified designer will help to guide you and edit your ideas so that you attain an effortless flow throughout the house.
5. Appliances
Think sleek and fully integrated appliances where you want the look to be seamless and clean. You’ll always get the most, and longest use out of quality made appliances so don’t skimp on these frequently used items.
6. Benchtops
Such a wide range of options available for your benchtops – marble, quartz, Caesarstone, corian, timber, stainless steel, concrete, tiled… the benchtops in a kitchen will single-handedly complete the look. Your designer will help to guide you in your search and offer information about finishes available and what the ideal product is for the kitchen’s use.
7. Lighting
Lighting plays an important part in a busy kitchen area, with a well-lit kitchen allowing you perform your tasks efficiently. By adding task lighting such as undercabinet strip lighting or pendant lighting over a bench area, you can increase the light and add a bit of a feature to the kitchen.
8. Splashback
As with benchtops, the splashback is the focal point of any new kitchen. With a range of options available, you will be only limited by your imagination.
Tiles, marble, corian, stainless steel, timber look, or brick, the colour of each product can be matched to the benchtop for a seamless look or you could make a feature of the splashback by contrasting the finish of benchtops.
9. Finishes
Consider your lighting options both natural and added, when opting for the colour and finishes of your cabinetry. A kitchen space with loads of northern natural light will be bathed in sunshine most of the year round and you could afford to go with a dark colour on the cabinets and doors.
If you will be limited by how many windows you will have and natural light, going with a lighter colour will allow the kitchen to seem more spacious. Timber finishes will add a warmth and depth to the kitchen area with the interest in the texture and grain of a natural timber look finish. Alternatively, a 2-pac painted finish is durable and easy to maintain for a family kitchen and with a range of colour options you can match it back to your wall paint and have a seamless clean look throughout.
10. Handles
Whether you choose to go with handles or without, this will add to your chosen style of the kitchen. A sleek modern kitchen is informed by push/catch mechanisms on doors and drawers and don’t need handles. Alternatively, a discreet finger pull handle also adds a tiny detail to a simple, modern style. Brass knobs and pulls are more suited to a relaxed coastal style home going for a Hamptons look.
11. Flooring
Keep your kitchen flooring the same as the other rooms in the house to enable a seamless look throughout. Whether a timber floor, tiled, or polished concrete the flooring will also help to complete the kitchen look and bring the style of the kitchen together with the rest of the house.
